Boom Cards and Secondary Mathematics
Boom Cards create opportunities in secondary mathematics for students to develop error analysis skills.
When developing mathematics Boom Cards consider disambiguating multiple ways to represent an answer. Fill in the blanks allow multiple representations of an answer. For fractions, consider having separate numerator and denominator entry blanks. Disambiguation helps both you and the student conduct more specific and precise error analysis.
When creating a card, you can use any characters that can be typed into the text edit box. This means you can use symbols and exponents and notations. For extensive disambiguation, manually arrange multiple text edit boxes.
For fill in the blank answers, students can type many symbols, and Boom also has a “math” on screen keyboard to help out.
Here are some steps to assist with creating Boom Cards using on screen keyboards for accessibility, and for providing a simple way for students to enter math symbols.
While editing a deck, click the Details button in the blue menu at the top.
When the Details modal appears, click the gray Play tab near the center and top of the modal.
The Onscreen Keyboard setting is available in the center. Click it to choose from onscreen keyboard options. In this instance, look for the Math or Numbers keyboards.
Note: an onscreen keyboard will be visible when playing a Boom Card deck that has Fill-in-the-Blank widgets and has and onscreen keyboard selection enabled. The onscreen keyboard becomes visible when a Fill-in-the-Blank field is clicked or tabbed to during play.
